Travel Notes: Sedona & Tucson
Share
In February, my husband Dave and I took a trip to Arizona to escape the cold Maine weather and get inspired by some new (warmer) scenery. Dave is also an artist and we were both dazzled by the southwest landscape.
In Sedona, we stayed close to a trail head not far from the Chapel of the Holy Cross, an interesting architectural feat of the 50s built into the red rock buttes and surrounded by stunning natural beauty. This area around Cathedral Rock is one of several so-called "Vortex" locations in Sedona, believed to be strong centers of Earth's energy, often associated with spiritual and healing experiences. While Dave and I can't say for certain that we felt the Vortex, it's hard to not feel moved by the beautiful surroundings. We both spent time hiking and painting and soaking up the daily sunshine. We also enjoyed good food and coffee — our favorites were FreeForm Coffee Roasters and Wildcraft Kitchen.
From there, we drove down to Tucson and stayed at a really special Airbnb on a working horse sanctuary called Congruence Tucson. It was peaceful, beautiful in its simplicity, and so thoughtfully designed. I cannot wait to visit again. The casita is surrounded with views of golden desert pastures where the horses roam amidst a maze of towering Saguaro cacti.
We got to know the owner, Peggy O'Kelly and her wonderful herd, a mishmash of characters all with tragic pasts — literally living their best lives. She now works with humans alongside the horses to help people learn to heal themselves. On her website, Peggy describes Congruence as "a horse and human sanctuary where offerings are rooted in a synergy of neuroscience, ancient practices and nature driven medicines."
Tucson itself had a creative, laid-back energy that we really enjoyed. Really great coffee and food here as well. We had amazing meals at Coronet Cafe, Cafe Passe, and Anello, among others. Great coffee at EXO Roast Co. and pastries from Rosebud Bakery.
I also did a fair amount of thrifting throughout the trip and found a few great vintage pieces — coming soon to the Magic Dog shop!
